ABOUT
Tetiana Kalivoshko is a Ukrainian-born artist based in Los Angeles whose multidisciplinary practice includes painting, sculpture, performance, and site-specific installations. Kalivoshko studied at the L’viv National Academy of Art in Ukraine and later continued her studies at East China Normal University in Shanghai. As an artist who worked in China after leaving Ukraine, her work seeks to challenge institutional attempts to locate artistic practices within national and cultural borders. In her paintings and performances with the Los Angeles-based art collective Cultural Drifts, she creates ambiguous psychic geographies that serve as uncanny refuges for new ways of thinking about what art can mean today and what forms of subjectivity it may suggest. Her recent performances wrestle with perennial questions that have haunted artists and writers for millennia: What is the artist’s responsibility when making work in a time of war, refugee crises, and climate devastation? Most importantly, what should be the philosophical and moral focus of artistic practice in an era of growing political tribalism?
In 2016, she participated in the documentary project Fall in Love with Ukraine, based on the book by renowned Shanghai artist. The project involved traveling and filming across Ukraine, documenting landscapes, people, and cultural life, with a particular focus on her home region.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, including presentations in Ukraine, China, the United States, and Chile. In 2017, she debuted her installation Spring War during Miami Art Basel Week, a project reflecting on the transformation of war imagery into symbols of renewal and hope. Works from the Spring War series are now part of the collections of the Boyarsky Museum in Kyiv and the Lesia Ukrainka Literature Memorial Museum in Kolodiazhne, Ukraine.
Other notable projects include Old Legend (Changzhou, China, 2016), Gold Inside (SALA En Tránsito Gallery, Santiago, Chile, 2018), Strangers (Pinta Art Show, Miami, 2019), and Red Means Love (Kovel, Ukraine, 2019). In 2024, Kalivoshko presented a new iteration of Spring War at THIRTYSIX Gallery in Los Angeles.
In addition to her independent artistic practice, Kalivoshko is the co-founder of the Cultural Drifts Art Collective, an interdisciplinary platform dedicated to installation, performance, and experimental art. Through Cultural Drifts, she co-produced two performance festivals in Los Angeles: a restaging of Allan Kaprow’s 18 Happenings in 6 Parts (2024) and Notes From the Underground (2025), both exploring contemporary approaches to participation, performance, and collective experience. Recent performances can be viewed at Culturaldrifts.com
Her work continues to move between visual art, performance, and film, reflecting on how memory, culture, and political realities shape personal and collective narratives. Together with Cultural Drifts, she is currently working on a documentary examining how the war in Ukraine affects not only the themes artists engage with but also their unique modes of expression. While focused on Ukraine, the documentary also asks broader questions: How does cultural heritage change during war? How are language and tradition transformed after catastrophe? How does trauma affect artistic style?
